Jessica studied iron casting as an undergraduate at East Carolina University in 1997, and learned to repair books while working at a student job at the university’s Joyner Library. After graduating from ECU in 2000, she worked for three years as a book and paper conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Massachusetts. During this time she set up a studio and took classes where she learned the basics of book art and printmaking. From there, she moved to Iowa City where she earned an MA and MFA in Printmaking and a certificate in Book Studies at the University of Iowa in 2009.
She now works as a studio artist in Asheville, NC, teaches workshops at Asheville BookWorks, is an adjunct professor of papermaking and book arts at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC, and is the co-founder and Co-Director of Ladies of Letterpress.
The Ladies of Letterpress is an international trade organization for letterpress printers and printing enthusiasts. Our mission is to promote the art and craft of letterpress printing and to encourage the voice and vision of women printers. We strive to maintain the cultural legacy of fine press printing and to advance letterpress as a living, contemporary art form as well as a viable commercial printing method. Membership is open both men and women who print or have an interest in letterpress printing. Please visit us at www.theladiesofletterpress.com, or find out more about our upcoming conference at www.letterpressconference.com.
